Follow up. Follow up. Follow up.

Follow up, follow up, follow up. This nugget of advice applies throughout your job search in relation to any number of events, from self-assessment to connecting with others. Refer to the Following Up Checklist for an overview of what to keep in mind in various follow up activities. Follow up with yourself regularly to assess and reassess your objectives and your progress. Follow up with your network to maintain and build relationships. And of course, follow up after job interviews to reinforce your interest in the position and demonstrate your professionalism. Clearly, following up is an all-important activity that serves a number of purposes, and yet, it’s remarkable how many people don’t manage it effectively at all. Most people do make an effort to follow up after an interview, so you won’t necessarily distinguish yourself by sending a thank you, but you certainly will distinguish yourself (and not in a good way) if you DON’T. You want to stand out by CONTINUING to follow up in an appropriate manner. Polite persistence is what will keep you top of mind without coming across as a nuisance. Keep in mind though, that nothing is certain, so as part of your follow up, continue your job search until you’ve got the offer in hand.
